Barback FAQ
Common questions about booking bar assistants for your event.
What does a barback do at an event?
A barback manages the behind-the-scenes logistics of the bar. They restock beer, wine, and spirits, manage ice supplies, wash or restock glassware, slice garnishes, clean spills, empty trash, and perform supply runs. They ensure the bartender never has to leave the station, keeping service lines moving quickly.
Do I need a barback if I only serve beer and wine?
If you have fewer than 75 guests, a single bartender can typically handle beer and wine service alone. However, for larger guest counts or multi-station venues, a barback is highly recommended to restock coolers and clear empty bottles so service remains continuous. To compare menu setups and calculate beverage quantities, please review our planning guides below.
How many barbacks do I need for my event?
Typically, we suggest one barback for every two bartenders for standard full-bar events. For cocktail-heavy menus, large wedding receptions, or events with multiple bar stations spread across a venue, we recommend a 1-to-1 ratio of barbacks to bartenders. To verify support setups, please review our wedding and private party bar checklists.
Do barbacks work independently or with bartenders?
Our barbacks work as a team with our bartenders. They coordinate before the event begins to organize the bar layout, chill beverages, and prepare garnishes. During service, they support the bartenders to ensure a clean and efficient workspace.
Are KBS barbacks fully insured?
Yes. All KBS staff members, including barbacks, bartenders, and food servers, operate under our comprehensive general liability, liquor liability, and worker's compensation insurance. This ensures full compliance and protection for your venue and guests.
